Overview
About this adventure
The Upper Mustang Trek is one of the most unique and culturally preserved trekking experiences in the Himalayas. Located in the rain-shadow region of north-central Nepal, this remote area was once a restricted kingdom known as the “Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang.” Even today, it retains a mystical atmosphere, with ancient walled cities, medieval monasteries, cave dwellings, and a landscape that feels more like Tibet than Nepal.
This extraordinary region lies within the trans-Himalayan zone north of the Annapurna range, inside the protected Annapurna Conservation Area. Unlike lush green trekking routes, Upper Mustang is defined by stark desert cliffs, wind-carved canyons, and dramatic rock formations shaped over thousands of years.
The journey typically begins in the windy mountain town of Jomsom, following the ancient Kali Gandaki trade route through villages like Kagbeni and Chele, eventually reaching the walled capital of Lo Manthang. This region was once ruled by a Tibetan-influenced monarchy, and its cultural heritage remains deeply intact, with strong ties to Tibetan Buddhism.
One of the defining features of Upper Mustang is its striking similarity to Tibetan landscapes. The barren hills, red cliffs, and deep gorges create an almost lunar environment, dramatically different from the green valleys of lower Nepal. Snow peaks such as Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri are visible on clear days, rising sharply above the desert-like terrain.
The spiritual atmosphere is equally powerful. Ancient monasteries, chortens (stupas), prayer flags, and cliffside caves used for meditation for centuries give the region a deeply sacred feeling. The highlight of the trek is Lo Manthang, a fortified medieval city surrounded by high walls, where traditional life continues almost unchanged for generations.
Because Upper Mustang lies in a restricted area near the Tibetan border, trekkers require special permits, which help preserve its fragile culture and environment. This limited access has allowed Mustang to remain one of the most well-preserved cultural landscapes in the Himalayas.
